Cages

Young girls make me cry inside.

Lost, exposed, no sense of pride.

Self-worth:

A concept stolen,

Rewritten,

Appropriated.

Paths ending in traps–

Beauty, brains,

Tiny cages

Straight-edged boxes,

No dimensions,

Just one option:

Lesser evils.

Core Beliefs

Last week we talked

About core beliefs.

I cried so much I couldn’t speak.

Struck too close to home.

Ghosts of past haunt me,

Still control me,

Still strike me down,

Still push me back

As I struggle to move on,

Go forward,

Progress.

You taught me it makes sense,

It’s understandable

Why these fears

Loom so large in my life.

Childhood taught me

Abandonment is just around the corner

Waiting to snatch you

From the safety

You possess,

You fight so hard to cling to.

I just need to know

Does understanding lead

To overcoming?

Or am I doomed?

Last Night Part II

Last night

I uncovered the past,

Sifted through

Letters,

Photos,

Our former lives.

Families disappear

Like butterflies

Fleeing a cocoon

Transform.

Friendships endure,

Others form a wasteland,

StirringĀ emotions,

Volcanoes that lay dormant:

Willful amnesia.

I recognize the sadness in my eyes,

The momentary happiness

So fleeting.

My arms around your neck,

Loving embrace

Quickly turns to dust,

Morphs into hate.

The past,

I tightly seal

A Rubbermaid bin

To keep the pain

Contained.
